(Cornelis Guillaume van Beverloo) was born in Liege in Belgium in 1922, but of Dutch ancestry. (Cobra group).
Corneille studied art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam, Holland. He was one of the founders of the REFLEX movement in 1948 and in 1949 he was also one of the founders of the COBRA group in Denmark, which has had great influence on Scandinavian art. The African people, rituals, forms and colours have inspired many artists. One of them is Corneille, the well known Dutch painter.
Corneille, together with Karel Appel, started the Experimental Group in 1948 and joined Cobra in the same year.As a co-founder of COBRA-the famed experimental artists group in 1948, he became a leading abstract expressionist painter and printmaker along with such notables as Appel, Alechinksy, Jorn and Dubbuffet. In the mid 1950's he travelled and exhibited throughout Western Europe. He first came to the United States in 1958 having two years earlier won First Honorable Mention at the Carnegie Institute.
