From catalogue raisonne "HUNDERTWASSER l'œuvre gravé 1951-1986"

For Hundertwasser, the year 1968 was particularly eventful. It was then, in fact, that he read, in Vienna, his manifesto Los von Loos, which stood against the sterile architecture (of which Adolf Loos (1870-1933) appeared to him as the founder) and advocated the free transformation of buildings by the occupants themselves.

Then, too, Herschel B. Chipp, a director of the modern art section of the University Art Museum in Berkeley and, for many years, a great connoisseur of Austrian art, passed him ordering a new print. Chipp had used his knowledge to organize, in 1963, an interesting exhibition A Neglected Expressionist Movement-Viennese 1910-1924, and devoted, since 1966, to the study of the life and work of Hundertwasser. The result was a remarkable Hundertwasser exhibition as well as a magnificent and very important catalog. The exhibition then traveled from city to city, under the leadership of Joachim Jean Aberbach. The latter managed not only to place it, finally, in the Phillips Collection in Washington, but still to offer it to the eyes of the public for two years in a row - unprecedented distinction for a young artist.

It was in 1957 that Joachim Jean Aberbach, the manager of Elvis Presley in New York, heard for the first time, through Guy De Lahoussaye, the name of Hundertwasser as that of a genius.
Joachim Jean and his brother Julian, who lives in Paris, acquired in 1959, at Flinker and at Cordier in Paris, the first works of Hundertwasser for their collections, and from then on they became both the main collectors of his works as well as his promoters on the American market, even if Aberbach is no longer of this opinion today: <Hundertwasser did not need help. God gave him the genius of painting, and his mother gave him the genius> to make his interests prevail vis-a-vis others. <These two helpers were sufficient.>

Alberto della Vecchia undertook on this occasion a work as had hardly been known until then. One model was a work entitled The Annunciation of the Good News (285), painted in 1956 at Saint-Mandé (Seine), which was transposed into many colors (at first ten, to which the artist added five others later) according to the silkscreen process and completed with metallic stampings. We experimented again with fluorescent inks. The print was produced in multiple color variants.

Beyond the one hundred and thirty-nine proofs composing the Berkeley edition, he returned to Hundertwasser, by contract, one hundred and eleven proofs on which he overprinted in Venice five additional colors and a stamping, and that he signed a second time.

It is this variant signed and numbered 137/250 of the version (b) that we propose here.
