Pop Art

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied at the Boston Museum School (1953--55), moved to New York City (1958), traveled to London (1967), and settled in Putney, Vt. (1970).
Known as a new realist, he used many mediums, including "happenings" (a type of spontaneous performance), constructional sculpture, collage, and painting. He is noted for his preoccupation with hearts and bathrobes, as in his paintings, Untitled (Gloves) (1970--71), and So Many Different Colors (1976).

In the late 1950s and 1960s he collaborated in Happenings with C. Oldenburg and produced Port art works and objects. From the early 1970s Dine's oil paintings, prints (perhaps his most successful work, usually sensitive and simple depictions of tools, robes, etc.) and drawings became increasingly figurative. He collaborated with writers, e.g. series of lithographs with R. Padgett (1970). ...
