Much of the vitality and authenticity of Greenhalf's work stems from his method of working. Failing light or a rising tide demands a spontaneous and intuitive approach, with light and movement taking precedence over plumage details. The spirit of place, of time, and the landscape are as important as the birds in it. Working in watercolour allows the atmosphere of the day to influence the work directly, for in the harsh midday sun, the paint dries quickly with crisp outlines, whereas in the soft light of evening it dries very slowly, allowing the colours to blend and outlines to blur in an appropriate way. ...
